The anticipated starting salary will be $90,000-$105,000.
Starting salary within the salary range will be commensurate with skills, education, and experience.

Position Summary
The OSU Libraries and Press, Special Collections and Archives Research Center is seeking a Department Head.  This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Special Collections and Archives Research Center’s (SCARC) primary mission is to preserve and provide access to the OSU Libraries’ distinctive holdings of manuscripts, university records, historic photographs and maps, rare books, and other archival materials. SCARC is the repository for the university’s archives that document OSU’s history, several archival and rare book collections that focus on the history of 20th century science and technology, the Oregon Multicultural Archives and the Oregon State Queer Archives, established to document and tell the stories of Oregon’s diverse communities, and the Oregon Hops and Brewing Archives, which documents the long history of hops cultivation and research in Oregon and the more recent craft brewing industry. SCARC’s holdings also include robust collections in natural resources, especially forestry, agriculture, and wildlife conservation. SCARC’s active oral history program supports all of its collecting areas.

The Director provides strategic leadership and administrative support for the department’s operations including collection development, organization, maintenance and preservation of collections; reference and instruction; promotion and outreach services; collaborative development of digitization initiatives and projects; cultivation of donor relations; budget management; workflow coordination and human resources management; and operational management of the department’s physical facilities. The Director provides leadership and vision for innovative services and programs to a skilled team that includes various professional employee positions within a complex organization, including unionized, non-unionized, ranked faculty, classified staff, and fixed term professionals (2 tenured librarians, 2 ranked faculty, 4 professional faculty, 2 classified staff, and several high-achieving student workers, as well as 1 Programmer/Analyst within unit that works closely with SCARC). The Director serves as a point of contact for donors, academic and community users and visitors, vendors, library and university personnel, and a broad range of other library and archival organizations in matters relating to the acquisition, preservation and use of the Libraries’ specialized and unique collections.

The Director reports to the OSU Libraries and Press (OSULP) Dean and is a member of LAMP (Library Administration, Management and Planning team), and contributes to the overall planning and management of the OSU Libraries and Press. 

This is a tenured administrator position. Eligibility to be hired with tenure will be evaluated by the OSU Libraries Promotion and Tenure Committee; tenure is granted by the OSU Provost. 


Position Duties
40% Administration of the Special Collections and Archives Research Center
  •  In collaboration with SCARC faculty and staff, as well as OSULP colleagues, determines an integrated vision and goals for SCARC.
  •  In collaboration with SCARC faculty and staff, develops a framework which prioritizes, facilitates, and supports projects and workflows to meet department level and team level goals and priorities.
  • In collaboration with SCARC faculty and staff, develops solutions to address the challenges and opportunities facing special collections and archives, including the implementation of digital tools for collection management, preservation, and access.
  •  Administrates, collaboratively budgets for, and manages the department; summarizes departmental activities in formal reports.
  •  Actively develops and leads initiatives that advance anti-racist practices, diversity, equity, and inclusion within a special collections and archives context.
  •  Keeps abreast of trends and environmental changes that impact higher education, academic libraries, and the archival and special collections professions.
  •  In collaboration with SCARC faculty and staff, works with Library Spaces, OSU Facilities Services, and vendors to ensure that the equipment and physical facilities that maintain SCARC’s holdings are secure and well-functioning.
  •  Oversees the annual valuation of donated collections and works with OSU Foundation staff to ensure the development and maintenance of relationships with financial donors.

25% Advocacy and Collaboration
  •  Participates in the library’s administrative leadership team to communicate vision and priorities; collaborates with other library departments and develops strategies to move the library and department forward.
  •  Represents and advocates for SCARC collections and services within OSULP, OSU, and beyond.
  •  Fosters, cultivates, and maintains relationships with donors, other OSULP department heads, and stakeholders on and off campus.
  •  In collaboration with the OSUL Dean and OSULP administrators, develops fundraising strategies to support the goals and activities of the department, including donor outreach and the pursuit of granting opportunities.

25% Supervision
  •  Promotes, models, and supports a workplace culture that is collaborative, user-focused, innovative, and sustainable.
  •  Supervises 7 academic rank and professional faculty; fosters and advocates for professional development and growth so that all department faculty and staff flourish and are empowered to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing environment.

10% Service
  •  Contributes to the management of the Libraries through participation in and attendance at appropriate library and university governance committees, project teams, and task forces; engages in continuing professional academic growth through active participation in appropriate local, state, and national/international professional scholarly societies and organizations.
  •  Maintains awareness of best practices for archival and special collections through ongoing engagement with the professional community.

Minimum/Required Qualifications
  •  Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution or a foreign equivalent; or terminal degree in a related field.
  •  Significant record of achievement that merits appointment as tenured Associate or Full Professor in the Library. A significant record of achievement is a demonstrated record of engagement with the professional community, including scholarship and service. Scholarship may include, but is not limited to, serving as an author or editor of books, peer-reviewed articles, non-peer reviewed articles, grants, curated exhibits, encyclopedia articles, presentations, or other speaker engagements. Service may include, but is not limited to, membership or leadership of professional organizations, committees, task forces, or working groups at the local, regional, national, or international level, or serving in the role of journal editor or guest journal editor.
  •  Demonstrated experience leading high-performing teams, committees or workgroups with duties including but not limited to planning, prioritizing, and goal-setting efforts.
  •  Demonstrated experience collaborating across organizational boundaries and working with complex stakeholder groups to move projects forward.
  •  Demonstrated experience supervising employees, may include: hiring, training, developing, evaluating, coaching, or mentoring.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering the broadest appropriate access to cultural heritage materials.
  •  Demonstrated experience in and vision for building a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist culture in professional organizations.
  •  Ability to facilitate the development of a collaborative vision for a university archives and special collections, and to provide leadership to implement the vision.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  •  Demonstrated experience developing and managing budgets.
  •  Demonstrated experience with public facing promotion and outreach initiatives, which may include research, teaching, or learning.
  •  Track record of advocacy for or demonstrated experience in facilities management and improvement within a cultural heritage institutional environment.
  • Track record of advocacy for or demonstrated experience with the security and preservation needs of analog and digital cultural heritage materials.
  •  Demonstrated experience in identifying, building, and sustaining productive relationships with external stakeholders (including but not limited to financial donors, collection donors, and departmental advocates).
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Although most of the work for this position will be in a campus office environment, conditions may require remote work. Work hours are generally within 8am to 5pm, though could include evening and weekend time for event hosting and participation, as well as responding to facilities needs outside of normal business hours. Some travel can be expected for attending off campus meetings, conferences, and donor visits.
