Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (up to 40 hours per week anticipated during the summer of 2017 with a maximum of 20 hours per week during academic terms). Student Technical Assistant – Wild Pollinator Research Assistant position for the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society (FES) at Oregon State University (OSU).

This position will support a study for the Forest Animal Ecology Lab (http://fes.forestry.oregonstate.edu/research/forest-animal-ecology-lab). This position will assist with an experiment designed to assess the escape rate of different bee species from a trapping method frequently used in pollinator research. The incumbent will have the opportunity to gain skills in bee identification and the scientific method, build their resume, and potentially present at a scientific conference. This position is anticipated to start June 19, 2017 and end September 15, 2017.

Position Duties

100% Duties include:
- Collect data on native bee behavior, input data regularly, and undertake data quality control measures.
- Set up traps, hand-net bees from the surrounding area, and then monitor environmental variables and bee escape rates.
- Participate in occasional fieldwork, sometimes for multiple days at a time, for a study on the influence of wildfire on bee communities in southwestern Oregon forests.
- Drive OSU Motor Pool vehicles to field sites in southwestern Oregon.

Additional Required Qualifications

Possess a current, valid driver’s license and be eligible to drive OSU Motor Pool vehicles.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Experience trapping/collecting insects.

Successful completion of coursework, or a demonstrated interest in entomology, animal ecology, or a closely related field.

Familiarity with insect identification.

Prior research experience.

Student considering a career in ecology or natural resources.

Ability to be self-motivated, work Independently, highly organized, and maintain a strong work ethic.

Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

The ability to work full-time (up to 40 hours per week) from June 17, 2017 through September 15, 2017 is required.

The majority of work will be performed outdoors, at field sites where hiking through uneven and brushy terrain, with exposure to biting and/or stinging insects (such as bees) and poison oak, in all weather conditions is required.

This position requires work in a laboratory setting, which entails handling of and exposure to certain chemicals and will require adherence to the lab’s Chemical Hygiene Plans and Safe Laboratory Practices.

Personal protective equipment such as appropriate footwear and weather-appropriate clothing will be required to be provided by the incumbent; first aid kits will be provided.

The ability to lift/carry/push/pull objects weighing up to 30 pounds is required.
