Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, Intermittent Able Mariner positions in the Ship Operations unit of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. This position will be located in Newport, Oregon.

The Able Mariner is one of three able seaman positions which functions to assist the First Mate on the Research Vessel (R/V) Oceanus in the maintenance and repair of the vessel and its deck equipment, and to assist the mate on watch in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and three oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus, the 84-foot coastal research vessel Pacific Storm, and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.

Position Duties

45% – Stands watch as helmsman/visual and radar lookout/winch operator at sea. Stands security watch in ports other than home port.

20% – Cleans, paints, and maintains ship’s hull, decks, bulkheads, equipment, masts, quarters, heads and tanks. Assists in mooring and unmooring the vessel; with line handling during docking and undocking; with the deployment and recovery of instrumentation and equipment; and in rigging and handling scientific gear. Loads and unloads equipment and store. Assists in maintaining firefighting, lifesaving and safety equipment.

20% – Operates ship’s equipment such as winches, crane, boat, davits, anchor windlass, capstan, etc.

10% – Rigs, splices, and handles wire rope and synthetic lines.

5% – Actively participates in shipboard drills and emergency training including training ashore. Maintains firefighting and safety equipment; and fights fires and administers First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) when required.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma and six months of maritime experience.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
• Merchant Mariner’s Credential with an endorsement of Able Seaman, Special, or higher issued by the Coast Guard
STCW endorsements as appropriate for this position.
• Ability to obtain a passport
• Ability to read, speak, and write in English
• Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements

Additional Required Qualifications

Basic Safety Training and Lifeboatman certificates issued by the United States Coast Guard.

Current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

Successful completion of Firefighting, First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training prior to first seagoing assignment.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Experience working on a Research Vessel.

Experience with winch and crane operation.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

The employee in this position is required to work on board the R/V Oceanus, at sea, on research cruises that may last from 10 days to three weeks before returning to port. Ocean and weather conditions are highly variable. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs. Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work is required.
