Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, intermittent Ship’s Cook positions in the Ship Operations unit of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU). These positions will be located in Newport, Oregon.

The Intermittent Ship’s Cook position functions to assist the Ship’s Master in the efficient operation of the vessel by providing food and steward services to crew and scientists embarked. This position works on a vessel at sea up to 11 hours per day routinely and up to 220 days per year. The work is performed on the 84-foot coastal research vessel (R/V), Pacific Storm.

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and three oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus, the 84-foot coastal research vessel Pacific Storm, and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.

Position Duties

15% – Prepares menus, estimates requirements, places orders, receives and inspects food orders, and loads and stores foodstuffs required for three meals per day for voyages of 30 days and longer. Drives Oregon State University (OSU) Motor Pool vehicle to collect stores, supplies, and equipment as needed. Maintains stocks of linen and steward supplies as necessary. Performs inventories and records usage of those items for use in determining future orders.

70% – Prepares and serves meals. Makes soups, salads, sauces, and dressings as appropriate. Bakes bread, rolls, muffins, biscuits, and desserts as appropriate. Prepares entrees and determines cooking times needed to meet established meal schedules.

10% – Performs clean-up of the galley, messroom, storerooms, and refrigerators; ensures dishes, utensils, and equipment are properly washed and are sanitary. Maintains sanitation levels of food storage and handling areas.

5% – Participates in fire, lifeboat, and other vessel safety drills. May be required to perform vessel safety and emergency duties including fighting fires and providing First Aid.

Minimum Qualifications

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years of cooking experience which includes six months of cooking experience on a vessel

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
• Merchant Mariner’s Credential with Food Handler’s endorsement issued by the Coast Guard
• Ability to obtain a passport
• Ability to complete fire fighting training,
• Successfully complete First Aid and CPR Training
• Ability to speak, read, and write English
• Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements

Additional Required Qualifications

Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be eligible to drive OSU Motor Pool vehicles.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Experience sailing and cooking on research vessels.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

The Ship’s Cook is required to work on board the R/V Pacific Storm, at sea, on research cruises that may last from 10 days to three weeks before returning to port. Ocean and weather conditions are highly variable. The employee is this position is expected to work up to 11 hours per day. Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work is required. The employee in this position may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 30-50 pounds. This position is required to share a berth room with one other employee.
