Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill five part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week)
Student Technical position for the Oregon Wine Research Institute (OWRI) at Oregon
State University (OSU).

Applications are now open for the 2017-18 academic year. The objective of this scholar position is to provide qualified undergraduate students with a broader learning experience outside of the classroom by offering an opportunity to work and learn in a research environment with OWRI faculty.

The areas of research and education include viticulture, plant biology, enology, plant pathology, entomology, vine physiology, and molecular biology and genetics. Many OWRI faculty have joint appointments and do research as well as mentor graduate students, teach undergraduate courses and provide extension services. Besides working in their campus laboratories, they often do work in the field, at the Woodhall research vineyard and with grower and wine maker cooperators in the wine industry.

Successful applicants will be provided an hourly wage. Depending on duties, a Criminal History Check or Department of Motor Vehicles may be required. Duties and qualifications will vary by position.

Funding for this position comes from OWRI and are allocated directly to core faculty members. Faculty will receive up to $5000 for each successful scholar applicant. Funding for scholar positions is for the stated period and limited to students officially listed as undergraduates at the time of application and the duration of the work period.

• Awards are open to non-OSU undergraduate students

Position Duties

100% Provide research support to sponsoring faculty. Duties can be highly varied
and include bench top and field research, data collection, entry and analysis,
laboratory set up and maintenance, clerical support, field work, writing, meeting
support tasks, working with research technicians and graduate students, etc.

Must be a current Agricultural Sciences Undergraduate Student at the time of
application submission.

This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of
the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle
History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of
residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per
OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

To be determined by hiring faculty.

Work is performed in laboratory or vineyard settings with grower and/or winery
cooperators, on or off the main campus, and other research partner institutions.

May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.

Flexible hours as needed to complete experiments/projects.

May require work with hazardous materials or equipment.
