Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill up to two part-time (30 hours per week anticipated during the summer of 2017 with a maximum of 20 hours per week during academic terms) Student Technical Assistant (Ecology Technician) positions for the Department of Forest, Ecosystem, and Society at Oregon State University (OSU).

These positions will support the Intensive Forest Management and Biodiversity research project. The project seeks to quantify the effect of silvicultural herbicide treatments on wildlife habitat, the use of plantations by wildlife and associated interactions between wildlife and management practices. In the 7th year of the project, these positions will cover a variety of tasks, including the monitoring of long-term wildlife exclusion plots, plant community data collection, data entry, data organization and lab work.

Position Duties

30% Data Organization
Synthesis and reduction of complex data into a suit of quantifiable variables.

30% Lab Work
Processing of plant samples to quantify digestible energy and protein available to wild herbivores.

25% Data Entry
Manually enter previously recorded data into a database.

15% Data Collection
Deployment and monitoring of dummy caterpillars to quantify insectivory by songbirds.

Drive OSU Motor Pool vehicles to and from field research sites on the Northern Oregon coast range.

Minimum Qualifications

Additional Required Qualifications

Successful completion of at least five terms of coursework towards a Bachelor’s Degree and completion of at least one term of specialized coursework towards a degree in natural resources, ecology, biology, or a related field.

Experience and expertise using Microsoft Excel.

Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be eligible to drive OSU Motor Pool vehicles.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Experience or knowledge of use of a taxonomic key for songbirds and plants; experience (academic, technical, or extracurricular) in songbird, deer and elk, and plant identification.

Experience using ArcGIS and R Statistical software.

Strong quantitative abilities and the ability to communicate scientifically.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

These positions will require the incumbents to work on a computer 10-20 hours per week during the academic terms and 30-40 hours per week split between a lab and field work during the summer of 2017.

The incumbents will be required to work 10-20 hrs/week on a computer during academic terms, and 30-40 hours per week split between lab and field work during the Summer of 2017.

Summer field work will require the ability to traverse steep and rugged terrain in full sun and warm weather.
