Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, Intermittent Ordinary Mariner positions in the Ship Operations unit of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU). This position will be located in Newport, Oregon

The purpose of this Ordinary Mariner position is to assist in the maintenance of the Research Vessel (R/V) Pacific Storm and/or R/V Elakha under the immediate supervision of the Ship’s Master in a safe, efficient and effective manner.

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and three oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus, the 84-foot coastal research vessel Pacific Storm, and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.

Position Duties

60% – Cleans, paints, and maintains ship’s hull, decks, bulkheads, equipment, masts, quarters, heads and tanks. Assists in mooring and unmooring the vessel. Assists in rigging and handling scientific gear, and loading and unloading equipment and stores. Assists in fire fighting and maintenance of firefighting equipment.

35% – Operates ship’s equipment such as winches, crane, boat, davits, anchor windlass, and capstan, while at sea. Operates ship’s equipment such as cranes and winches while in ports to load and unload supplies and equipment. Assists in shipboard operations as required during research work at sea.

5% – Participates actively in shipboard drills and emergency training including training ashore. Maintains firefighting and safety equipment; and fights fires and administers First Aid and cardiopulmoanary resuscitation (CPR) when required.

Minimum Qualifications

No specific education or experience.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
• Merchant Mariner’s Credential with an endorsement of Ordinary Seaman or higher issued by the Coast Guard
STCW endorsements as appropriate for this position.
• Ability to obtain a passport
• Ability to read, speak, and write in English
• Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements

Additional Required Qualifications

Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Research Vessel Experience.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position works on-board the Research Vessel (R/V) Pacific Storm/ R/V Elakha at sea on research cruises that may last from one day to four weeks before returning to port. Ocean and weather conditions are highly variable. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs. Weekend and holiday work is required. This position may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 75 pounds for up to 100 feet. This position typically shares a berth room with three other employees.
