Position Summary

Oregon State University-Cascades, in Bend, Oregon, invites applications for a full-time, (1.0 FTE), 9-month, Executive Director in Residence in Outdoor Products. This is a fixed term Instructor rank faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.

OSU-Cascades is creating the first-of-its-kind bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Products.

This new program complements established programs in Natural Resources and in Tourism, Recreation, and Adventure Leadership. This new curriculum, with input and support from the most well-known outdoor product companies in the US, has been conceived and designed to prepare tomorrow’s outdoor product managers, entrepreneurs, and executives for roles in the growing outdoor products industry. The program of study will prepare a graduate to take an outdoor product from conception to market using a systems approach. Preparation will cover innovation, design, consumer behavior and demand analysis, supply chain, marketing, sales, and entrepreneurship. Because this industry relies on outdoor recreation, often enjoyed on public lands, the curriculum will include courses in natural resources, sustainability, and outdoor leadership, as well as internships within the outdoor products industry.

We are seeking the inaugural Executive Director in Residence to help launch and administer the program. The Executive Director will have input into the final curriculum and has the unique opportunity to develop this program from the ground up.

The individual in this position will develop, implement, and maintain an innovative Outdoor Products degree program offered at OSU-Cascades. The ideal candidate collaborates with leaders in industry, teaches, maintains currency, and performs service. This is a 9-month academic year position with a flexible start date starting in Fall 2017.
The relative percentage effort in the position duties listed below will change with the program launch and maturity. Initial teaching of 2 to 3 courses will increase to 5 to 6 courses as program development activities decrease.

In Oregon, the outdoor recreation economy exceeds $12 billion dollars a year in consumer spending and employs over 140,000 people. In Bend alone, there are over 100 outdoor companies, each with increasing needs to find employees with the education and skills necessary to grow their businesses. The outdoor product companies that have participated in creating and funding this program are eager to partner with the university through internships and other innovative hands-on educational experiences necessary for preparing students for careers in the management of outdoor products.

Oregon State University’s commitment to student success includes hiring, retaining, and developing diverse faculty to mentor and educate our undergraduate and graduate students from entry through graduation. Our Strategic Plan (http://oregonstate.edu/leadership/strategicplan/phase3) articulates the strategies we believe critical to advancing and equalizing student success. As part of this commitment, OSU has established a hiring initiative designed to support these strategies.

Salary is commensurate with academic preparation and professional experience.
