Position Summary

The Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

This position assists scientists from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, Pacific Northwest (PNW) Research Station and Oregon State University Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society in conducting field- and laboratory-based research in fire ecology, plant ecology, and forest management in the interior Pacific Northwest. The incumbent analyzes data; prepares figures, tables, and reports for publication; and contributes to grant proposals, research study plans, and field crew training.

The position is funded for an initial period of 7-8 months, but may be extended depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Position Duties

50% – Data Acquisition, Management, Analysis and Reporting:
Analyze ecological data using appropriate univariate and multivariate statistical methods, as needed, to address research questions. Interpret data and draw conclusions. Communicate results clearly to project scientists and other research team members. Acquire supplemental data and resources from external sources, as needed. Develop and manage Access databases to efficiently and reliably store and retrieve ecological data.

30% – Report Preparation:
Assist project scientists in the preparation of oral presentations, posters, and written reports for conferences and workshops, agency publications, and refereed journal publications, serving as co-author on publications. Search the published scientific literature for materials that are relevant to the research project. Summarize results of the literature search for use in oral and written reports. Produce written descriptions of analytical methods and results. Design and produce figures and tables that communicate results effectively and are of suitable quality for publication.

10% – Research Study Plan Development:
Assist project scientists in developing new research directions, grant proposals, and research study plans. Assist in the development of research questions, goals, and objectives. Propose and describe possible field studies, data analysis opportunities, or modeling approaches to address research study goals and objectives.

10% – Training Field and Laboratory Personnel:
Train laboratory and field crews to collect and process field samples and data consistent with written study plans. Train laboratory technicians conducting data entry, sample processing, and data management tasks.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

Master of Science (MS) degree (or higher) in Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Environmental Science, or a closely related field that provides knowledge of the theory, methods, and practice of ecological data analysis.

Demonstrated high level of proficiency in data management and analysis of ecological data using appropriate statistical analyses (e.g., generalized linear models, linear mixed models, multivariate community analysis).

Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following computer software packages common to the analysis of biological and ecological data: R, SAS/STAT, or PC-ORD.

Proficient in the use of personal computers, Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft Office programs (Word and Excel).

Demonstrated professional-level oral and written communication skills.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Experience designing and maintaining relational databases in Microsoft Access.

Evidence of prior publication in refereed journals.

Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and dendrochronology.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position is required to work at the Wenatchee Forestry Sciences Laboratory in Wenatchee, Washington. Most work is conducted in an office setting, but some trips to field sites may be required at times. Office work requires strenuous eye work, extended computer use, and long hours of sitting. Field site visits can require extended periods of standing or walking on steep, mountainous terrain. Field visits include risk of injury from falls, strains, movement through dense vegetation, insect bites, and exposure to inclement weather. Use of safety equipment is required to reduce injury risk.
