Position Summary

We are looking for an exceptional student (preferably with work-study) to work in our molecular lab at the OSU Plant Clinic. This involves DNA extractions, running PCR and LAMP assays, gel electrophoreses, imaging and photographing gels, communicating results to the PI and FRA, washing labware, autoclaving materials, and general lab duties. This is a 1-5 person lab.

Position Duties

40%- Extracting DNA from plant tissue, fungal and bacterial colonies

40%- Performing molecular assays, including PCR, qPCR and LAMP

10%- Running, imaging and photographing electrophoresis gels

10%- Washing dishes, autoclaving materials, other duties

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

The nature of this job requires individuals who are detail oriented and capable of precisely following step-by-step instructions.

We are seeking team players who are comfortable working independently and able to ask for help when needed.

Experience with plant pathology molecular diagnostics—DNA extractions, PCR, LAMP and gel electrophoresis—is preferred, although we are willing to train the right student.

This is a great opportunity for motivated and curious students looking to get hands on training with techniques in molecular biology, to learn from working researchers, and to solidify knowledge learned through coursework.

Applicants must:
• be majoring in biology or a related field
• be able to commit at least 8 hours a week
• be available to work during spring break and summers
• have a high school or OSU GPA >3.5
• have excellent English communication skills, both oral and written
Preference will be given to freshman and sophomores interested in a long-term commitment to research in the lab.

Work study preferred

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position requires working in a laboratory between 8am and 5pm on week days only.
