Position Summary

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time 1.00 FTE, 12-month, fixed term Faculty Research Assistant or Research Associate (Post Doc) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.

This position works with the Climate Impacts Research Consortium (CIRC), a Northwest partnership led by the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute (OCCRI) at Oregon State University (OSU).

CIRC is one of 10 regional projects of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Regional Integrated Science and Assessments (RISA) program. Serving the Northwest states, CIRC is an interdisciplinary team of researchers from OSU, University of Idaho, University of Oregon, University of Washington, and Conservation Biology Institute and is hosted by OCCRI in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS). CIRC’s funding was renewed in 2015 with a vision of transforming data into usable knowledge for climate adaptation, by co-production of knowledge with partners in the region.

This position has primary responsibility for managing the project and for leading stakeholder engagement. Managing the project includes coordinating team meetings and internal communications, ensuring timely reporting to NOAA, tracking internal budget and subawards to partners, and other responsibilities. The position will also lead stakeholder engagement in three specific ways: (1) managing the relationship with a Stakeholder Advisory Council; (2) as part of a community engagement project (location and nature to be determined) in which the incumbent will develop and cultivate relationships with on-the-ground partners; and (3) in connection with the development of an online climate toolbox, coordinate interactions with beta testers and project partners. The position also supports informal mechanisms for gathering and synthesizing continuous input from stakeholders, partners, and researchers to help with the formative evaluation process and ensure that critical needs are identified. This position will report to the Principal Investigators (PIs) of CIRC, currently Philip Mote (CEOAS) and Denise Lach (Director of the School of Public Policy in the College of Liberal Arts).

Position Duties

50%: Serves as primary liaison with external stakeholders. Manages the communications and relationship with the Stakeholder Advisory Council, coordinates a community engagement project, and promotes the development of an online climate toolbox by interacting with beta testers and project partners. Ensures effective outreach with the public, media, and stakeholders in disseminating research results, in coordination with CIRC’s communications lead. Travels within the Northwest as needed, including driving OSU Motor Pool, personal, and/or rental vehicles.

25%: Coordinates the project’s task teams, internal communications, and meetings fostering team integration. Supports research related to the overall mission and objectives of the projects, and assists PIs with managing budget as needed.

25%: Analyzes, interprets and organizes research results. Prepares annual reports and other communications for NOAA in compliance with proposal and funding agency requirements. Summarizes research and study results for publication and presentation at meetings and conferences. Could conduct original research and publish in peer-reviewed publications.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for a Faculty Research Assistant include:

Master’s degree in an area of social or natural sciences relevant to climate or natural resources.

Familiarity with basic climate science and ability to articulate knowledge of relevant literature.

Evidence of ability to manage and coordinate a multi-investigator, multi-institutional, interdisciplinary research effort.

Demonstrable commitment to communicating science information to non-scientists, computer skills to support communication, and excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Expertise in climate, watershed science or management, or landscape science or management.

Experience in public outreach/extension.

To be considered for a Research Associate (Post Doc) position, applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Faculty Research Assistant listed above, as well as the additional minimum qualifications below:

PhD in an area of social or natural sciences relevant to climate or natural resources.

Demonstrated proficiency for authoring scientific publications for submission to peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

The preferred qualifications listed below are valid for all ranks:

Demonstrated familiarity with university-stakeholder partnerships.

Experience working with diverse communities outside academia in the Pacific Northwest.

Demonstrable ability to connect with and understand the needs of external partners and stakeholders, and to identify their science needs.

Experience or aptitude for managing and updating web site content.

Ability to manage complex budgets.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Occasional travel within the Northwest and annually to national RISA meeting is required.
