Position Summary

This is an Internal Employment Opportunity

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time, limited duration appointment on an intermittent work schedule Biological Sciences Research Technician 3 (BSRT3) position in the Department of Crop and Soil Science.

This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately (1 years) from the appointment begin date.

The incumbent will be expected to perform routine to specialized tasks in support of soil geochemistry and pedology research. Position duties include laboratory organization, data collection, data entry, field work, data entry, soil sample processing, and data analysis.

Position Duties

30% Field Work
Measure soil temperature, determine soil texture using field methods, describe soil physical characteristics including structure, consistence, soil color, moisture, and percent vegetation cover. Collect soils to be analyzed in the laboratory environment. Plan and carry out trips to field sites. Communicate with stakeholders. Identify, flag, photograph, describe, and monitor ground nesting bee sites and collect associated soil samples. Collect bee specimens for identification and preservation in the laboratory.

70% Laboratory Sample Preparation and Processing
Catalogue and photograph all incoming samples to the laboratory. Manage sample inventory log for all inbound soil and rock samples. Air dry, sieve, and weigh samples for pH measurements, loss on ignition, electrical conductivity, aggregate stability, and particle size analysis. Chemically remove organic matter and iron from soil samples, grind samples by hand and using milling equipment for carbon and elemental analysis. Grind bulk powder samples using grinding mill in preparation for x-ray diffraction. Prepare oriented clay mineral mounts for X-ray diffraction using vacuum filtration system; develop laboratory protocols for inclusion in laboratory manual and Chemical Hygiene Plan; produce mesh mineral bags using systematic, organized methodology. Acid wash dishes and monitor the laboratory acid bath (replace as needed). Input new products and order requests into Quartzy Laboratory Management Software; maintain the organization of a cold storage room including proper labeling and sample inventory management in Quartzy. Measure other soil chemical/physical properties in the laboratory as needed. (OSU Campus)

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in (specific area of biological science) and two years of experience related to the area of assignment at a Biological Science Research Technician 2 level. Three additional years of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Science Research Technician 2 level may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.

Additional Required Qualifications

Prior experience in a soil science pedology laboratory.

Meticulous, detail-oriented, and ability to maintain organized, clean work spaces.

Consistency in completing repetitive laboratory or sample preparation tasks.

Work independently and collaborate well in team environments.

Ability to progress in work activities without direct supervision, and exhibit capability to learn new laboratory tasks quickly.

Effective communication skills.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Coursework in Entomology.

Soils-based GIS coursework.

Experience working with an online lab management software system, such as Quartzy Laboratory Management Software.

Lab management activities experience.

Experience monitoring ground nesting bee activity, identifying nests in the field, and pinning and identifying bees.

Experience designing potential soils habitat for ground nesting bee activity based on field observations.

Experience troubleshooting problems with laboratory equipment and contacting technical support services for resolution.

Laboratory safety experience (chemistry or biology).

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position will be split between laboratory duties and time in the field. Work is performed in typical laboratory conditions on main campus and in the field around Corvallis, Oregon. May have exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, loud noises, and machinery. May be exposed to heat, rain, wind, and long periods of standing, bending, or kneeling in the field. May maneuver up to 50 lbs. and may be required to stoop, bend, and kneel on hard floors. May be required to stand or sit at laboratory benches for sample processing and sit at computers for data entry tasks.
