Position Summary

The Oregon State University (OSU) Extension Service is seeking a Master Gardener Coordinator. This is a part-time, .75 FTE, 12-month, fixed-term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Southern Oregon Regional Administrator and the Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources Program Leader.

This Coordinator will serve the OSU Extension Service with assignment to Jackson County, Oregon. This position will be affiliated with the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Persons with solid backgrounds in farming and/or gardening, and a passion for leading volunteers in educational outreach, are encouraged to apply.

This Master Gardener Coordinator contributes to the mission and goals of OSUES and the College of Agricultural Sciences as they relate to Outreach and Engagement, with principal responsibilities for coordination of a large and complex volunteer program, and for needs assessment and Extension community horticulture program development, delivery, and evaluation. The position’s geographic focus is Jackson County.

Position Duties

60% – Master Gardener Volunteer Program Management

Provide leadership and volunteer management for the local Master Gardener volunteer program.

Oversee recruitment, training, and volunteer retention activities.

Develop and maintain an effective volunteer middle management structure.

Collaborate with peer faculty members and other professionals to ensure volunteers learn, and disseminate, information that is research-based and representative of best management practices.

Encourage and support active and effective volunteer outreach through community education and education-related service.

Ensure outreach activities and educational programs serve a wide range of populations, including those that have been historically underrepresented/excluded from participation.

Serve as liaison to the local Jackson County Master Gardener Association, advising on volunteer management and non-profit organizational procedures, and promoting activities consistent with the Oregon State University Master Gardener Program.

35% Home Horticulture

Collaborate with professional colleagues, Master Gardener volunteers, and community partners to develop and deliver, and/or organize and host, a wide range of urban and community horticultural educational programs that convey sustainable, research-based practices in a wide variety of garden, home landscape, natural resource and agricultural applications.

Serve as an active member of the Home Horticulture Working Group, contributing to the development of innovative program practices and educational materials.

Use technology successfully as a tool to communicate with, and increase the impact of, program delivery on constituents, including active contributions to the Ask-an-Expert web-based client question portal.

Use multiple methods of electronic communication to collaborate internally and externally as appropriate.

Implement fee-based programming and cost-recovery practices, develop partnerships, and solicit external funding to support and enhance educational programs as appropriate.

Organize, utilize, and maintain a program advisory committee/network.

Develop, implement, and maintain a plan of work that addresses urban and community horticultural educational needs.

Document the impact and effectiveness of educational programs and volunteer management activities.

5% – Service and Professional Development

Serve as an effective team member of the Southern Oregon Research & Extension Center team.

Serve the College of Agricultural Sciences and University through committee service and leadership, as approved by supervisor.

Provide service through professional organizations, non-profits, and/or agencies where compatible.

Assist in cohesive marketing of the OSU Extension Service.

Participate in professional development activities aligned with the position, as approved by supervisor, and demonstrate active professional growth.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or closely related field. Degree must be completed by application date.

Demonstrated urban and community horticulture experience.

Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and show evidence of good judgment.

Evidence of interest in and/or experience related to informal adult education programs.

Demonstrable ability to lead/supervise volunteers.

Demonstrated teaching, written, and oral communication skills including effective use of electronic (traditional and web-based) and printed media.

Demonstrated ability to lead groups and to plan, organize, evaluate, manage, and delegate details associated with program management.

Demonstrated skills and ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people, organize educational programs and groups.

Demonstrated ability to utilize computer software in support of the educational and program management objectives.

Demonstrated ability to work as a team member with other professionals and volunteers.

Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Pesticide Consultant license within six months of employment and maintain it throughout employment.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

An understanding of and commitment to the basic philosophies of the Extension Service and the Land Grant University system.

Demonstrated life experience, education, and/or training that broadens capacity to equalize the success or impact on underserved audiences.

Bilingual (English/Spanish). Ability to speak and/or understand Spanish.

Demonstrated ability to secure external funding support for educational and research programs.

Demonstrated experience using multiple forms of electronic communication, including social media

Demonstrated ability to adapt to the changing technological environment.

Demonstrated experience understanding of the role of program advisory committees.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Some evening and weekend work may be necessary.

Must be able to work in office, classroom, auditorium, and outdoor learning settings.

Must maintain an Oregon Pesticide Consultant license throughout employment.
